The tomato is a member of the nightshade family, whose origins go back to South America. Often mistaken as a vegetable, a tomato is actually a fruit, because of the fact that the seeds during the growing process are contained within the final result, stemming from the ovary of the flower itself.
Tomatos come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and are enjoyed throughout the world. They also have many health benefits, partly do to their contents of antioxidants. Tomatos have what is called lycopene, which is believed to at times help with prostate cancer.
Tomatos also have been known to contain large amounts of both vitamin A as well as vitamin C. Studies have even shown that tomatos may help with heart disease and blood pressure.
Because the tomato contains decent levels of a healthy sugar, this can also be a better alternative than regular sugar, and tomatos also contain small amounts of carbohydrates, which makes adding them to a pasta dish very delightful without packing on added carbs.
