Mangosteen is a tropical fruit which often times is misspelled as mangostene. It quite possibly came from Indonesia originally, and it has a sweet flavor that makes it very familiar to the more common place fruits that most people are accustomed to eating. It contains almost no fat, and is a good source of water, carbohydrates and dietary fiber.
Mangosteen must be grown under very specific conditions, mostly do to its low tolerance of even slightly low temperatures, and due to the fact that there are restrictions on how it is exported, and to whom the exportation can go to - it is much harder to track down than one would expect. Though the fruit can be found in certain stores across the North American region, it should never be assumed that it will always be made available.
Because of its obvious source of sugars and carbs its a great fruit for increasing energy, and has also been known to help with stomach ulcers. Some studies have possibly shown that it can fight effects of dementia, or Alzheimer's. In ancient cultures it was also widely used as an anti-diuretic. The best mangosteens to look for are those that have a purple-ish color, which is when they are ready to eat.
Many studies have been done to see how mangosteens can help with certain medical problems, but at the time of writing this - the basis of some of the research conducted must still be considered inconclusive. You may want to be a little cautious before jumping out there and trying your first purple mangosteen, because the fruit when mixed with certain other digestives could cause a state of sedation, and since it would appear that not enough is known about the mangosteen - the full list may be itself, inconclusive.
There is no denying, however, that like many fruits, the mangosteen is very high in antioxidants, which of course are known to help combat free radicals that can attack cells. The fruit also contains a good source of vitamins, some of which include B1, B6, B2, C, and some good minerals such as iron, calcium, and potassium.
